What Must I Do To Be Saved?

Acknowledge your sin and need for a Savior

The Bible states that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). This means that no one is able to earn their way to heaven or eternal life through good works alone. Before seeking salvation, you must first recognize your sinful nature and your inability to save yourself.

Believe in Jesus Christ

The central element of Christian salvation is believing in Jesus Christ. This means trusting that he is the Son of God and that his death on the cross and resurrection paid the penalty for your sins. The Gospel of John says, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16).

How Do I Talk To God?

Many people find that talking to God is like talking to a close friend, with no need for formal or flowery language.

  • Be honest. God already knows what's on your mind. You can talk to him about anything—your worries, your anger, your hopes, and your dreams.
  • Talk throughout the day. Prayer doesn't have to be limited to a specific time and place. Acknowledge God's presence in your daily life by offering brief, heartfelt thanks or requests.
  • Go to a quiet place. Sometimes, finding a peaceful, private space can help you focus without distractions.
  • Write down your prayers. If speaking aloud is difficult, writing can be a powerful tool for communication and reflection.
  • Follow the Lord's Prayer as a template. While not meant for rote memorization, this prayer can guide you to include elements like praise, confession, and requests for guidance.
  • Thank him for your blessings. Cultivating a heart of gratitude and focusing on what God has already provided can strengthen your awareness of his presence.

Is it mandatory that I get baptized?

Many denominations do not believe that baptism is a requirement for salvation. The following biblical points support this view:

  • Saved by faith alone: The apostle Paul explicitly taught that salvation is a free gift received by grace through faith, not through works or rituals like baptism.
  • The thief on the cross: The thief crucified next to Jesus received a promise of salvation from Jesus despite not being baptized. He simply confessed his belief, and Jesus said, "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise" (Luke 23:43).
  • Salvation before baptism: In Acts 10:44–48, Gentiles received the Holy Spirit and were saved before being baptized, demonstrating that receiving salvation precedes the act of baptism
